This hybrid machine capable of flying 30 feet (10 m) above the ground for half an hour is currently being tested in flight. So when will it be on the market? • XB-1 – supersonic Baby Boom

  

  A supersonic jet flying at over 2,300 km/h with 45 passengers aboard is the project of American startup Boom. The XB-1, as it’s been named, could begin flying in 2023. A reduced-size model, dubbed ‘Baby Boom’, should be ready for take off by late 2017.

  Airbus group has announced its decision to delay a stratospheric flight by its Perlan 2 glider in Argentina – aimed at gathering vital information on climate change and the state of the ozone layer.

• A botched landing for the Airlander airship

  

  A week after its first flight, the Airlander 10 airship botched its landing. As it hit the ground, the cockpit was severely damaged but the two pilots are safe. This is a serious setback for the company, HAV (Hybrid Air Vehicles) who is running this project.
   

  

• Modobag, an electric suitcase

  

  From now on, you won’t have to carry your suitcase anymore as it will carry you! The Modobag is equipped with an electric engine that will get you to your gate effortlessly at just over 8 mph.

• Clean Sky takes off at Farnborough

  

  At the Farnborough Airshow this week, the European research programme, Clean Sky, presented the status of several of its key projects. Amongst them are the Open Rotor, the laminar wings and the hybrid propulsion engine.
