The very serious French national school of civil aviation (ENAC) in Toulouse, south western France, was recently transformed into a paper ‘plane airport. This qualifying stage of the Red Bull Paper Wings, in fact began in early February in the ENAC gymnasium. The competitors had to fly their ‘planes over the longest distance, the longest time, or produce the most acrobatic manœuvres possible.
The eighth and final race of this year’s Red Bull Air Race, which was held on 26th October, saw the 12 participating pilots fighting it out above the Spielberg grand prix racetrack in the Austrian Alps. The 35,000 spectators witnessed Lamb, Arch and Bonhomme, the first three in the overall standings, fiercely battling it out in the air.
For the penultimate round of the competition, the organizers of the Red Bull Air Race could not have picked a better location than Las Vegas. With its casinos, hotels and especially its car racing circuit in the Nevada desert, redesigned for the occasion, everything came together for what promised to be an enthralling poker game in the sky - and yet…
