Video - Xplorair, car of the future, to fly in 2017

Since our last report in 2011, Michel Aguilar’s project, Xplorair, the flying car of the future, has moved up a gear. A French industrial consortium has been created, with four patents, and the concept of the thermoreactor jet engine validated by the engine manufacturer Turbomeca and the Institute of Pprime research, having been established.

This new jet engine is an innovative propulsion system integrated into the front wings and the rear fuselage, allowing vertical take-off and a subsequent top horizontal speed of 200 km/h (124 mph). Advances that allow the designer the possibility of foreseeing the maiden flight of a fullsize demonstrator in less than three years’ time.

"Our short-term goal, at the Paris Air Show in June 2017, is to demonstate that this innovation, or rather innovations, because there are a number at all stages, do operate, to the point that initially, because we can’t do everything at once, we have an unmanned vertical take-off aircraft.’’

After the first flights in drone mode, will come manned test flights, followed by certification and marketing. There is still a long way to go, but with the new Chinese investors' financial assistance, willing to pay 25 million Euros up front, the Xplorair could well and truly one day, like those in the film, The Fifth Element, be part of everyday life; a potential market of several million units.

"This will be the flying car of tomorrow, the car of the third dimension. We can see that in 10, 15, 20 years it will be hyper-saturated. We need to think in 3D; it’s inevitable and therefore Xplorair’s vocation is to gradually transform the current car form into one that flies.’’

To avoid traffic jams on the roads, you will need between 75,000 and 100,000 Euros. This vertical take-off car could ultimately be manufactured in China, where it might spark some interest in a country with more than 240 million cars on its roads.

    Is'nt there a 1/30 mock up wing that could be tested in ONERA wind tunnel to check the feasibility of this concept ? Thus flight test with and without using coanda effect could be checked on aerodynamic balance (Cx,Cz)..
