Video - Crash in Norway: Super Puma’s main rotor detached in flight

- By

The crash of an Airbus Helicopters’ H225 on Friday morning, at Turøy, western Norway, left 13 people dead. The rotorcraft was returning employees from an offshore Norwegian Sea oil platform. At present, it is unclear why the H225 Super Puma’s main rotor detached in flight, causing its fatal fall. An investigation has been opened by the Norwegian Accident Investigation Board (AIBN). Analysis of the helicopter’s black box is currently underway.

Following the accident, the British and Norwegian civil aviation authorities have decided to suspend all H225 passenger flights in their countries; forty aircraft are concerned. The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is awaiting the initial outcome of the investigation before issuing a statement on the matter.

Since its release in 2004, this is the first fatal accident involving an H225. Worldwide, there are 176 civilian Super Pumas in service.
