PlayThrust reversers: what are they used for? Thrust reversers form an integral part of commercial aircraft jet engine nacelles... But what are they used for? How do they work? And are they mandatory? When landing on water or snow covered runways, jet engines sometimes take on strange looks. Nothing to be alarmed about, quite the contrary, it is in fact, the thrust reversers which have been deployed. Located in the nacelle surrounding the engine, this device slows the aircraft and reduces its braking distance! To understand how this works, we visited Aircelle. For over 30 years, this company has manufactured thrust reversers used on commercial aircraft with seating capacities exceeding 100. "In the normal operation of an aircraft, the fan air-flow is in the direction of the engine, i.e., from the front to the rear, and when the thrust reversers are activated, the blocker doors and vane grids are opened, the fan air-flow is diverted and pushed forward functioning like an air brake. " A particularity of the thrust reversers is that they are one of the few moving parts on a commercial airplane; and for obvious safety reasons, should only be used during landing. For security all thrust reversers are equipped with a triple safety system! "These three lines of defense have as function, the prevention of the thrust reverser opening in flight. It comprises a mechanical lock, an aerodynamic lock and a system lock. " In addition to being a landing aid, thrust reversers also reduce engine NOISE, significantly! And though they are mounted on the majority of aircraft equipped with jet engines, this equipment is NOT mandatory... a plane is also certified WITHOUT its thrusters being activated!
