787: taking off again soon? Boeing has just proposed three solutions to remedy the battery problems on their 787’s to the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA)… After being banned from flying for 6 weeks, the 787 may soon be able to return to service. It has to be said that hundreds of engineers and technicians at Boeing are hard at work on the problem, giving them little time to recharge their batteries. A solution to the crisis must be found, and soon... On February 22, the U.S. air-framer gave its proposals to remedy the problem, to the F.A.A. Informed sources have indicated the possibility of individual separation / insulation of the eight internal battery cells to avoid propagation of fire due to overheating, a more solid stainless steel box, and adding a vent to contain any fire and expel the flames in the event of any other incidents. Although the current has visibly passed between Boeing and the FAA, no decision has yet been taken. In a statement, the U.S. civil aviation authority indicates simply, that it will study these proposals closely, but says, ( and we quote ): “The safety of the flying public is our top priority and we won’t allow the 787 to return to commercial service until we’re confident that any proposed solution has addressed the battery failure risks”. Because, the question that has to be asked, now is: do the solutions advocated by Boeing solve the problem of short circuit, or quite simply contain a possible outbreak of fire ? The final decision lies with the F.A.A.. For the moment, Boeing doesn’t seem to have decided on getting rid of its new lithium-ion batteries, unlike Airbus who, in playing it safe, has kept to the Nickel-Cadmium solution for its main A-350 batteries. According to a study by the Frost & Sullivan group, these new generation batteries should have a bright future ahead of them. Estimated at nearly $ 12 billion last year, this market is expected to double by 2016. Meanwhile, flight cancellations with companies operating the Dreamliner are increasing. For example, All Nippon Airways has just announced that their 787’s will remain grounded, at least until the end of May.
