To mark its 40th anniversary, the company has repainted one of its planes in its original 1 October 1972 livery. But for Malaysia Airlines, it’s above all, the opportunity to celebrate the results of its change in strategy. After several months of deficit, the Malaysian company recorded a profit of one million euros in the third quarter of 2012. Since last year, the carrier has been pulling out all the stops to exit the crisis. Closure of unprofitable routes, strengthening national and regional offers, alliances and fleet renewal. Three Airbus A380’s will complement its fleet of 105 aircraft, which already has three. One way of increasing the available number of seats. And it works. With two daily flights between Kuala Lumpur and Heathrow, the airline has recorded a 22% increase in traffic in six months. Next step: Paris. On March 1, an A380 will replace the Boeing 777-200 presently used on the daily liaison between the French capital and the Malaysian hub. Every day, 494 seats will be available as against the present 280, and the company foresees a fill rate of 80%. And despite the failure of a joint venture with the Australian carrier, Qantas, in early 2012, Malaysia Airlines is still seeking to develop cooperation deals. In early February, the company will join the Asian: One World alliance. Today the company serves more than one hundred destinations, and carries 37,000 passengers daily. With all these changes, the airline hopes to return its accounts to the positive, this year, and for good.
