Take-off in view for Réplic'Air After a year of hard work, the Morane Saulnier Type G built by the Réplic'Air association is nearing completion. The plane should make its maiden flight in a just few days with the objective of being ready for the September 22 re-enactment of the first crossing of the Mediterranean... It looks really great with its ‘M’ form landing gear, representing its original manufacturer, its spoked wheel undercarriage, fabric-covered wings and the unusual wooden joystick. The Réplic'Air association is now giving it its last finishing touches. In a few days an inspector from the Directorate General for Civil Aviation has to declare this Morane Saulnier Type G - “airworthy”. From August 5, the aircraft will carry out its first taxiing tests and maiden flight at Auch airfield ( not far from Toulouse in South-Western France ). A place that was not randomly selected since it has an 850 metre ( 2,800 foot ) long grass runway, a big asset, notably on landing, when you realize that the plane has no brakes! "Due to the wing geometry, we have to initially touch down on ONLY the main undercarriage, and NOT a three point landing with the undercarriage and rear skid. Another point is that as long as the ‘plane is moving forward under power, and still with sufficient speed, it’s the rudder that allows us to control the aircraft on the ground; as soon as the speed drops below a certain level, directional control with the rudder is lost, and since the plane has no brakes, it almost takes on a mind of its own." For the first flight, to break-in the machine, the team has called in an expert - Christophe Marchand - test pilot with the Canadian manufacturer Bombardier. After that, other pilots will take over, notably for endurance flights of 8 hours: the theoretical time of the legendary crossing of the Mediterranean between Frejus and Bizerte. D-Day is not far off and the count-down for the exploit of September 22, 2013 has already begun. "At 06.00h we’re raring to go, briefing around 07.00h, update on the latest weather conditions, and then take-off of the Morane around 08.00h; accompanied by three escort planes flown by members of the association, who will act as liaison between the Morane and the rest of the world. The idea really is to facilitate the Morane pilot’s job, so that he can concentrate on the job of controlling the plane, leaving everything concerning radio communications and navigation etc., to be carried out by the accompanying aircraft." The landing of the Morane Saulnier in Tunisia is expected mid-afternoon, either on the military base in Bizerte, or a landing strip next to the sea. 100 years after that of the Roland Garros, another feat is nearing completion.
