PlayA350 first flight imminent! The future long-haul Airbus will soon roll out onto the runway. Freshly painted, the first A350 to take to the air will now perform two types of ground tests over the next fortnight. Its first test flight is imminent! The countdown has begun. The first example of the A350 to take to the air, and just painted in the Airbus colours, has left the production line and entered the test phase. Henceforth, the prototype will be able to undergo four or five engine tests. "First it’s slow idling, to see if all the aircraft systems are well and truly powered by the engine regarding air-conditioning etc., and all other electrical aspects." The engines will undergo very high speed and thrust tests, which will last ten days; the time to analyze the parametres recorded during each one. After that the A350 will be taken onto the runway but without actually taking off. "At that time we will start rolling or taxiing tests, mainly to check the braking aspect of the plane. One at low speed and another at high speed, that’s to say over 100 knots, very close to the take-off speed of the plane." One way to check the proper functioning of the thrust reversers and flaps. If everything comes up to expectations, two or three taxiing tests will be sufficient. Then comes the long-awaited first flight. Pierre Baud, seen here, has carried out five during his career. One of which was the A320; this step is almost just a formality because the aircraft is not pushed too far. "It will fly without going beyond the limits that have been set by the design offices, which we call the flight domain. Of course there’s always a risk, since by definition the first flight is, naturally, the first time that the aircraft is in flight, and therefore there could be some surprises. But in my past 20 years’ experience, on a first flight we’ve never had any major surprises." According to our information, the A350 should lift off the tarmac during the week of 10th., June. To date no specific date has been mentioned; the manufacturer is probably waiting for the end of these ground tests and a favourable weather-window before making a decision…
