A drole drone. The French Higher Institute of Aeronautics and Space in Toulouse has developed the MAVion. Thanks to this new generation flying drone equipped for specific reasons with wheels, intelligence missions could be carried out soon. This strange machine will probably never win an award for its design; on the innovation side, however, it’s unique. The MAVion is in effect a new generation drone. With its vertical aerofoil guiding its horizontal movement, propellers and two wheels, this WELL-identified Flying Object can fly forward, hover and roll up and down walls, or ceilings. A concept patented in 2007 by the Institut Supérieur de l’Aéronautique et de l’Espace, - Higher Institute of Aeronautics and Space at Toulouse, in the south west of France. "A lot of work has been done in terms of concept and design of the drone, and a particular feature concerns the control mechanisms, i.e. the on-board auto-pilot system, which is a small computer that handles the transition between the different modes." This radio-controlled drone, weighing under 500 grams ( or one pound ), can reach 50km / h ( 30 m.p.h. ) top speed, but above, all can be equipped with a mini-camera in the carrying out of its mission. Many applications are envisaged, such as structural crack detection on engineering projects, or the location of victims in a burning building; but for the moment, it’s the army and police who will probably be its first users. "The tasks that can be assigned to this type of drone, are in cases where it’s necessary for example to see what is happening inside a house, where there is a mentally unstable person, or something like that. So it’s clearly the Special Forces, and all such services out there, that are very interested in this drone, for use as a sort of tracker, or to see what’s happening in places not easily accessible." SurveyCopter, manufacturer of remotely-operated systems, and highly interested in this drone, is currently making some minor modifications, i.e. smaller wheels and a plastic frame. The objective being to market the MAVion, before the end of the year, on the French, American and Israeli markets.
