Video - Washington National Air and Space Museum

- By

In the heart of Washington, a few hundred metres from the Capitol, the museum of Air and Space is often one of the most popular attractions for tourists visiting the US capital; and the Wright brothers' airplane is certainly one of its finest pieces.

An original of which Bob van der Linden, the curator, is justly proud.

Nearly 70 years after its inauguration, the collection has grown and now has nearly 360 historical aircraft. Amongst them one of the most popular: the Spirit of Saint Louis.

With 8 million visitors annually, it is one of the most popular museums in the world . A 14,000mmuseum which, thanks to federal subsidies and grants, is also completely free.

Astronautics history also finds its place here with parts of Apollo 11, the only mission that allowed man to walk on the moon. This is a replica of the lunar module, as well some originals like this original re-entry capsule, which, having brought the astronaut Michael Collins back to a perfect splash-down middle of the Pacific, was directly put on display here.

Original pieces, of which, some are also exhibited near Washington International Airport. An ideal final visit before taking off yourself.
